When a burst pipe is an emergency and how to stop the water
If water is spraying, pouring from a ceiling or flowing along a floor, every minute adds damage. Stopping the flow is the single most useful thing you can do.
- Find the main shutoff. It is usually near the water meter, at a hose bib on the front or side of the house, or inside the garage.
- Turn it off and open a tap.Close the valve fully, then open one faucet low in the house to relieve pressure.
- Stay safe around electricity.Keep away from outlets and cords in wet areas, and switch off breakers only if the panel is dry.
- Call the 24/7 line.Tell us where the water is and what pipe you think burst.
If you cannot find or close the main valve, call us anyway. The line is staffed around the clock and the plumber can close the supply at the meter if needed.
Why pipes burst in the desert
Freezing gets the headlines elsewhere, but burst pipes in Florence come from several causes. Winter nights do dip below freezing now and then, and exposed hose bibs, irrigation lines and pipes in exterior walls or attics can freeze. Water pressure that runs too high strains joints and fittings.
Age and corrosion do their work over the years. Copper can develop pinholes, galvanized pipe corrodes from the inside and plastic fittings crack. Exposed PVC and irrigation lines turn brittle in summer sun and can split without warning.
A pressure regulator that has failed can raise house pressure over time. We test pressure when we find one burst, since it often explains why a pipe let go.
Cracked pipe, pinhole or full split: how the repair differs
The kind of break determines the fix.
| Break | Typical cause | Repair |
|---|---|---|
| Pinhole in copper | Corrosion from the inside or outside | Cut out the section and install new pipe or a coupling. |
| Split along the pipe | Freeze or high pressure | Replace the burst section. |
| Cracked PVC or fitting | Sun, age or impact | Replace the fitting or run a new section. |
| Failed shutoff or supply valve | Wear and mineral buildup | Replace the valve and test. |
| Cracked drain pipe | Settling, impact or age | Replace the section and pressure test. |
Copper pipe repair is handled with sweated fittings or push-fit couplings, depending on the situation. PEX repairs use crimped or expansion fittings.

Call (480) 741-9332Supply valve and fixture connection failures
Not every emergency is a pipe. A burst supply line under a sink, a failed toilet shutoff or a corroded fixture valve can put out as much water as a pipe break. When a valve will not close, we replace it and test the whole fixture. See faucet repair and toilet repair for those faults.
What to document for insurance
Take photos and video of the burst and the water damage before anything moves. Keep the damaged section of pipe if you can. Make a list of damaged belongings and write down when you found the leak.
Policies differ. Many cover sudden damage from a burst pipe but not the repair of the pipe itself. A claim may also require that you stop the water and begin repairs promptly. We stop the leak and repair the pipe but do not handle drying and rebuilding, so ask your insurer for a restoration company if you need one.
When repeated bursts mean the system is wearing out
One burst in a sound system is a repair. Two or three in a short time are a warning. If the camera and pressure tests show widespread corrosion, replacing the whole supply system can cost less than repairing each break. We explain both paths on the repiping page and let you decide.
What burst pipe repair costs and what moves the price
You hear a price before the repair starts.
Copper costs more to work than PEX or PVC.
A burst behind finished drywall or tile needs opening and patching.
A short section is quick. A long run may need rerouting.
One break is quick, but several along the same line extend the job.
Pressure regulator, shutoff valves and testing may be needed.

Code note: materials and joints
The UPC and the IPC both list approved pipe materials and joining methods for water supply lines. A burst-pipe repair uses approved fittings and is pressure tested before we leave.

We repair the pipe and make the access opening. Drywall, paint and flooring rebuild is a separate trade.
A single accessible break is often fixed within a few hours. Hidden breaks, drywall access and multiple damaged sections take longer.

Not always. One burst in a sound system is a repair. If tests show widespread corrosion or repeated failures, we discuss repiping.
