When a clogged drain is an emergency
Most single-fixture clogs can wait a few hours. A few situations cannot, because wastewater is already coming into the house or the line has failed completely.
- Sewage or gray water rising in a tub, shower or floor drain when you flush or run water.
- Every fixture in the house draining slowly or gurgling at the same time.
- Water standing in the kitchen sink with the disposal running and the dishwasher backed up.
- A sewer smell inside the house along with any of the above.
If more than one fixture is affected, the blockage is probably in the main drain or the building sewer, and that is the call to make right away.
What to do while you wait
Stop running water in the house. Every flush and every load of laundry adds to what has nowhere to go.
Pull up rugs and move belongings away from the lowest drain, usually a shower or tub on the ground floor. Keep children and pets out of any wastewater and wash your hands after touching anything it reached.
What blocks drains in Florence homes
The Town of Florence says its water comes from groundwater wells, according to the 2025 Consumer Confidence Report from Florence Water. Groundwater in the Sonoran Desert carries dissolved minerals that can leave scale inside pipes over the years. That report does not list a hardness number, so ask Town Utilities for one or test your tap before assuming anything about your own lines.
Age matters as much as water. Buildings in the Florence Townsite Historic District, which the National Register listed in 1982, include structures well over a century old, so drain lines there may have been patched or rerouted more than once. A camera shows what is really underground.
Newer subdivisions such as Anthem at Merrill Ranch have the opposite pattern. The pipes are younger, and the clogs are usually grease, hair, wipes labeled flushable and building debris from the first years of the house.
Kitchen sink clogs and why they come back
A kitchen drain carries grease, food scraps and soap residue, and it runs through a trap and a long horizontal run where those materials cool and stick. The sink drains a little slower each week until one night it stops.
- Standing water on one side of a double sink usually means a clog past the disposal or in the branch line.
- Both sides full and the dishwasher backing into the sink points to the shared line downstream of the tee.
- A sink that clears for a week and slows again means the cable made a hole through the clog but did not remove the coating on the pipe wall.
That last pattern is why we scrape the line wall with the right cutter head, or move up to hydro jetting, instead of only poking a hole. If the disposal itself is jammed, garbage disposal repair is a separate fix.

Call (480) 741-9332Cable, camera or hydro jet: which one fits your clog
The right tool depends on where the blockage is and what it is made of. This table is how we decide.
| Method | Best for | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Hand auger or sink machine | Sink, tub and shower branch lines, hair and soap clogs | Short reach and not meant for the main line. |
| Drum cable machine | Main drain and laundry stacks, root hair and paper blockages | Leaves a coating on the pipe wall if grease is the cause. |
| Sewer camera | Finding a collapse, offset joint, sag or root mass after repeat clogs | A diagnostic tool, so it pairs with a clearing method. |
| Hydro jet | Grease, sludge and scale on the pipe wall, and roots in larger lines | Needs a sound pipe, so we look with a camera first. |
Snaking a drain without damaging the pipe
A cable machine is safe in a sound pipe when the operator matches cable size and cutter to the line. Problems start when someone forces a cable through a broken joint or past a cracked clay or cast iron section.
If the cable stops at the same spot twice, we pull it back and put a camera in. A blockage that will not move is often a pipe problem, and the answer is then sewer line repair instead of more cabling. A camera inspection can be booked on its own through sewer inspection when you only want to know the condition of the line.
What drain cleaning costs and what moves the price
A drain clearing price depends on the job, so you hear a number before work starts and not after.
A sink trap is quick work. A main line behind a cleanout takes longer and uses bigger equipment.
Longer runs and tighter bends add time and often a second tool.
Grease and roots usually need a cutter or a jet, not just a plain cable.
A cleanout outside the house is fast. Pulling a toilet to reach the line adds labor.
Adding a camera pass shows the line condition and is priced as part of the visit.

Code note: traps and vents
The Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) and the International Plumbing Code (IPC) both require a trap and a vent on each fixture drain. If a clearing visit exposes a missing or undersized vent, he tell you, because a vent fault can cause the same slow, gurgling drains that a clog does.
Drain cleaning across Florence and nearby towns
We clear drains in the Townsite, along Hunt Highway and at Anthem at Merrill Ranch, and dispatch also covers Coolidge and San Tan Valley. Landlords and property managers can call for rental units and small commercial spaces, and we note the unit and tenant contact before arriving.
Repeat clogs, odors or a single fixture that gurgles when another drains are all worth a call before the backup happens.
Questions about drain cleaning in Florence
Yes. Dispatch is open 24/7 and a backed-up main line or sewage coming up through a floor drain is treated as urgent. Call, say which fixtures are affected, and we book the next available plumber. Stop running water in the meantime.
Run the fixtures one at a time. If only the kitchen sink is slow, the clog is probably in its branch line. If the tub gurgles when the toilet flushes or several fixtures slow together, the blockage is further downstream, usually the main drain.
A cable machine in a sound pipe with the right cutter is a standard, safe method. Risk rises in old or cracked lines, which is why we put a camera in when a cable keeps catching at the same spot.
Grease and soap coat the pipe wall, and a simple cable only opens a channel through the middle. The coating builds back. Cutting the wall clean or using a hydro jet usually ends the cycle.
We advise against it. Chemical cleaners can harm some pipes and fittings, and they are hazardous to anyone who then has to work on the drain. A plunger is a safer first step for a single fixture.
Yes. Tell us it is a rental or commercial unit when you call so we can arrange access with the tenant. Restaurants with grease problems may also need the work described on our commercial plumbing page.
