When a disposal problem is urgent
A jammed disposal is an annoyance. These situations are not.
- Water leaking from the housing or the sink flange into the cabinet.
- Wastewater from the sink backing up into the dishwasher or the other basin.
- A burning smell or smoke from the motor.
- Standing water in the basin that will not drain at all.
What to do while you wait
Switch off the disposal and its breaker. Never put your hand in the opening, even when it is off.
Do not run the dishwasher while the sink is backed up. Empty the cabinet and wipe up any water.
Jam, hum or leak: what each sound and sign means
A disposal gives clear signals.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Humming but no grinding | Jammed flywheel | Free the jam with the hex socket and reset. |
| Silent, no hum | Tripped overload or no power | Reset, test the switch and wiring. |
| Leak from the bottom | Cracked housing or failed seals | Replace the unit. |
| Leak at the top | Loose sink flange or gasket | Reseal the flange. |
| Leak at the side | Dishwasher hose or drain connection | Replace the hose clamp or connection. |
A leak from the housing itself cannot be sealed. The unit has to be replaced.
Dishwasher hookup, air gap and why the sink backs up
The dishwasher drain connects to the disposal or to a branch on the sink drain, and a high loop or air gap keeps wastewater from flowing back into the dishwasher. When the disposal clogs or the knockout plug was never removed, water backs up into the dishwasher.
We reattach the dishwasher line, remove blockages and make sure the drain is set up so it does not siphon.

If the basin is full and the disposal runs but nothing drains, the clog is downstream. Grease, coffee grounds and fibrous food scraps build up in the trap arm and the branch line. A cable or a jet clears it. See hydro jetting if the sink keeps clogging every few weeks.
Choosing and installing a new disposal
A replacement is a good choice when the housing leaks, the motor fails or the old unit has been repaired repeatedly.
- Horsepower: larger motors handle tougher scraps with less jamming.
- Feed type: continuous feed for everyday use, batch feed for added safety.
- Mounting: most modern units fit existing flange mounts, but some older sinks need an adapter.
- Electrical: a plug-in kit or hardwire connection, depending on your setup.
We remove the old unit, set up the new flange, connect the drain and dishwasher line and test for leaks before we leave.
What not to put down a disposal
Fibrous or expanding foods jam disposals or clog the line. Grease and fats cool and coat the pipe. Hard items such as bones can damage the blades or lodge in the trap. Running cold water while the unit operates, and for a few seconds afterward, helps flush the waste down the drain.
What disposal repair costs and what moves the price
You hear the price before work starts.
A jam release costs far less than a new unit.
Higher horsepower models cost more.
Cord and plug or hardwire changes the job.
A corroded flange or trap adds parts.
Replacing a hose or reconnecting the drain adds a small amount of work.

Code note: air gaps and drain connections
Local code decides how a dishwasher drain connects near a disposal. The UPC and IPC both address air gaps and high loops. A new disposal installation should respect whichever your jurisdiction requires.
